What is terminal block?

Terminal Block is a common term used in the field of electrical engineering and electronics.

Terminal Block is an electrical connector used to secure and/or connect two or more wires.

It consists of a clamping assembly and a conductive strip. The electrical connection is made by clamping the wires onto the conductive strip by means of the clamping assembly.

Terminal Block

Terminal Block is a modular insulating device for safe and easy connection of multiple wires.

It usually consists of the following parts:

  • Insulating base (made of plastic or other insulating material to prevent short circuits).
  • Metal conductive tabs/screws (to hold the wires in place and provide a conductive path).

Terminal Blocks are widely used in various fields of electrical and electronic engineering, such as industrial control, power distribution, instrumentation and communication equipment.

various fields of electrical and electronic engineering

There are various types of Terminal Block, including:

  • Screw Terminal Block: The wires are fixed to the conductive strip by means of screws.
  • Spring Clamp Terminal Block: Wires are clamped to the conductive strip by a spring mechanism.
  • Insulation Displacement Connector (IDC) Terminal Block: The connection to the conductive strip is achieved by inserting the wire into the slot and displacing the insulation.
  • Bulkhead Terminal Block: The wire is clamped between a metal bulkhead and a conductive strip.

Related Terms

Terminal Strip: Often used interchangeably with Terminal Block, but may refer specifically to a long strip of terminals.

Connector: A general term for a connector (e.g., USB port), as opposed to the fixed wiring of a terminal strip.
